Cheeky and charming, Matt’s an instinctive copper - his policing radar is second to none. His approach to policing is equal parts seduction and force; he knows which aspect to use to get the best out of the situation. His smile can win over the hardest cynic. Opinionated, but not arrogant, Matt loves being a copper and adores his partnership with Ronnie. He’s not weary or cynical about the job – this is what he was born to do. He’s a grafter; persistent and determined. Hardworking, efficient and thorough, Matt has a traditional view of the law: but he’ll also push past the rule of procedure when he feels his cause is just. He’s decent, honourable and tough and expects others to be the same. If Matt has a fault, it’s that he’s more absolute than Ronnie – he has principles which he believes everyone should adhere to: he doesn’t quite understand that sometimes life gets in the way. What he and Ronnie share is a sense of mischief: each recognises the twinkle in the other’s eye. They’re known at the station as Morecambe and Wise, having been inseparable now for five years.

Matt grew up in Kilburn, in an Irish Catholic family. His Dad wasn’t shy about using physical punishment on his kids – and there wasn’t much room for feelings and emotion in that household. He’s had his share of heartbreak, but that doesn’t stop him flirting with pretty much everyone he meets.
